This indexing method was created by Sriram Bhikaji Velankar posted in Kolkata and was released in the country on 15 August 1972 by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Under this indexing method, nine postal regions have been created in the country, in which the first eight represent the geographical area and the ninth is reserved for the Army Postal Service. The PIN system is arranged in the following way -

The first digit represents - the zone.
The first two digits represents - the sub-zone or or postal circle.
The first three digits represents - a sorting District.
The first four digits represents - a service route.
The last two digits represents - the delivery post office.

  • Army Postal Service

    The operation of the Army Postal Service (APS) exclusively for the Indian military system is provided by the Department of Posts. This service is provided at the cost of postal charges domestic mail traffic, both domestic and foreign.

  • Electronic Indian Postal Order

    Electronic Indian Postal Order (e-IPO) was launched by India Post in 2013 for citizens residing abroad. It was later expanded on 14 February 2014 to include all Indian citizens.

  • Postal Life insurance

    India Post also provides live insurance services. It is the oldest life insurer in the country. Initially it was started for the benefit of Postal employees including female employee. Later it was extended to all rural residents 24 March 1995. There were over 6.4 million life insurance policies active as on 31 March 2015

  • Postal savings

    India post provides various type of savings schemes like recurring deposit accounts, Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA), National Savings Certificates (NSC), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), the Public Provident Fund, Monthly-income plans, Senior-citizens' savings plans and Time-deposit accounts.

  • Banking

    India Post has also entered the independent banking industry. On 1st September 2018, India Post Payments Bank(IPPB) has been launched to provide various types of banking services through Post Offices

  • Data collection

    Post Offices as a data center plays a positive role especially in rural areas. The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) in collaboration with the Department of Posts succeeded in computing the Consumer-Price Index for rural areas based on the prices paid for selected consumer goods. In February 2011, MoSPI published its first Consumer Price Index (CPI) and All India Consumer Price Index.

  • E-commerce delivery

    In view of the increasing demand for e-commerce nowadays, the postal department has partnered with several leading e-commerce portals to deliver parcels which include pre-paid as well as Cash on Delivery (COD) parcels.

Apart from the services mentioned above, post offices also provide many other types of services, which are named as follows -

Speed Post, India Post ATM, Railway Mail Service(RMS), Post office Passport Seva Kendras(POPSK), Aadhaar Enrollment and Updation center, Western Union services, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), Stamp Sales.
